2008-2009 Bus Fee Letter

On April 9th, the Board of Trustees accepted my recommendation and approved charging a fee for school bus transportation starting in the 2008/09 school year. This was done reluctantly, but was a necessary action given the dismal outlook for education funding in the state budget. Read more...

Employees of the Year

Karen Russell has been selected as the Teacher of the Year at Shadow Hills, and Denise Smith has been selected as the Classified Employee of the Year. Ms. Russell retires this year, but she continues to try new things in her classroom while calling on her vast experience. In her classroom, students work as a family and take difficulties in stride. Ms. Smith is the School Secretary and manages the front office. Her job includes a wide range of responsibilities that keep the school running smoothly, and she does them with a smile.  Both of these outstanding employees will candidates for district employees of the year.

Help for our Garden!

The grounds and maintenance department has been working hard to provide a water source to the school garden. We received a grant for the garden, and several PTA members have been working in the garden all year, including Debbie Keyes, Terri King, and Mary Thibault.   However, with the new water supply and the advice of Master Gardener Darlene Larsen, we should see good things happening. We are grateful for the support of the parents, Ms. Larsen, Chris Burgio and the grounds department.

Welcome Back!

Thanksgiving play performed by Ms. Hernandez's class.

Ms. Hernandez's first graders and second graders performed their Thanksgiving play for parents and family members on Monday morning. The Knight Theater was full of parents, grandparents, siblings, friends and others as the students appeared in full costume. They knew their lines well and the performance was outstanding. Ms. Hernandez acknowledged parents who had helped put on the play. Shadow Hills is grateful to Ms. Hernandez for her hard work in preparing costumes, teaching lines and directing the play.

Dress-up Day!

Students at SHES enjoyed dress-up day on October 31st. Many students and teachers joined the fun by wearing costumes, and some staff even played their character all day long. The day ended with holiday activities in the classrooms. SHES says thanks to all the parents who contributed to a successful event.

Fall Festival

Due to the fires last week, our Fall Festival could not be held as planned. There were a number of difficulties in finding an appropriate time to reschedule it. As a result, the teachers and the PTA have agreed to have holiday activities from 2:00 – 3:00 on Wednesday, October 31, 2007, in the classrooms. Students will be allowed to wear costumes on Wednesday. The PTA may consider having another event later in the year. If you pre-purchased tickets for the fall festival, you may contact the PTA directly.

Parents, please keep in mind the costume rules published earlier. Dress code rules apply, no masks or make-up may cover the face, no replica weapons, and costumes should be age-appropriate.

I would like to say a special thanks to the PTA board and parentswho worked so hard to put together the Fall Festival. It is unfortunate that the wildfires, which have affected so many people in numerous ways, have also impacted the efforts of the PTA to put on an event for the benefit of our children.
