Alpine School District Wellness Policy
The Alpine School District Wellness Policy is all about helping students make "healthy choices" with respect to nutrition and physical activity.
A healthy food item will have no more than a third of its calories from fat or one third of its weight from sugar. Beverages include water without added sweeteners, fruit and vegetable juices and fruit-based drinks that contain at least 50% fruit juice and that do not contain additional caloric sweeteners.
As part of a standards-based curriculum, nutrition education is an integral part of the instructional day. Nutrition education is addressed during health instruction in the classroom. The idea is to promote the consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grain products, as well as low-fat and fat-free dairy products.
All students receive physical education. Classroom health education will complement physical education by reinforcing the knowledge and self-management skills needed to maintain a physically-active lifestyle and to reduce time spent on sedentary activities, such as watching televsion.
Snacks: Snacks served during the school day will make a positive contribution to children's diets and health, with an emphasis on serving fruits and vegetables as the primary snacks and water as the primary beverage.
Schools will limit celebrations that involve food during the school day.
Schools will not use foods or beverages as rewards for academic performance or good behavior.
